The gap originated by different resistance to the erosion of the rocks that make up the river Mau\u2019s bed, with the granitoids up stream of the waterfall being harder to resist erosion, and the softer downstream shales to be easily eroded over the course of millennia. The cascade shows the contact between the geological formation of S. Jo\u00e3o de Ver and the Pre-Ordovician rocks characteristic of this region. The white-throated dipper is the guardian of this cascade.
